On 17 December 2020 the Government of Greenland has approved to start the public consultation of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Social Impact Assessment (SIA) for Greenland Minerals A/S’ rare earths project at Kuannersuit (Kvanefjeld). The public consultation begins on 18 December 2020 and ends 12 weeks later on 12 March 2021. The Government has decided to hold public meetings at Igaliku, Narsaq, Narsarsuaq, Qaqortoq and Qassiarsuk during the consultation period. The dates for the public meetings will be made public on the Government’s website www.naalakkersuisut.gl.
Publication of the consultation documents on Naalakkersuisut.gl does not mean that the Government of Greenland has approved the consultation documents. Such approval will only take place by signing of an IBA and granting of an exploitation licence.
Minister for Industry and Mineral Resources, Jens-Frederik Nielsen states: ”The start of the public consultation marks an important step for all of Greenland, which has been long awaited. In the consultation phase all interested parties are invited to comment and raise concerns. All comments will be processed and answered in a white paper, which forms a basis for the further update to the EIA and SIA reports.”
The public consultation documents in Greenlandic, Danish and English, and the background reports are available here.
